The Hygge Touch: Inspiration for Your Day-to-Day (and Homemade Hot Chocolate)

How do you hygge? We think homemade hot chocolate is SO hygge!

Adding that hygge touch to our home décor, our book selections, and our beverages – more specifically: homemade hot chocolate.

You may already know, but I stepped into 2018 with a clear-cut reading goal. I dove into the new year with the ultimate hygge book (one of the best, I heard). Without a doubt, I have been so inspired (and totally intrigued) by the lifestyle.

It’s no wonder the Danes are best known for being such a happy population. The hygge concept is all about adding that touch of warmth, coziness, and togetherness to your every day.

I found myself going into my daily routines with a more “hygge mindset”:

  • Throw blankets for a cozier setting
  • Thickly-knit sweaters for keeping warm
  • A good book (obviously)
  • Warm drinks with my family (especially on the weekends… our downtime)

Adding that hygge touch to our home décor, our book selections, and our beverages – more specifically: homemade hot chocolate.

You can imagine how crazy our days can get. Being a work-at-home mom pretty much translates into: multitasking-schedule-making-content-creating-diaper-changing-cooking-meals-while-answering-emails-girl-boss-mom. I love every second of being a WAHM but I am also so grateful I learned more about hygge.

I now make it a point to give myself breaks, to embrace motherhood (most importantly, disconnected), and to enjoy weekends off with my whole family.

Here’s my take on homemade hot chocolate that’s totally comforting, totally delish, and totally hygge:

Lisa’s Ultra-Fab Homemade Hot Chocolate

1.5 cups milk
¼ cup milk chocolate chips
½ tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp condensed milk
Marshmallows for topping

In a small saucepan, start whisking milk and chocolate chips over medium heat. Whisk until the chocolate chips have completely melted.

Add cocoa powder and whisk. Put down the heat to low and stir in condensed milk.

Remove from heat and cool until it’s at the desired temperature (because it’ll be really hot!)

Pour into your favorite mug and top with some miniature marshmallows.

Don’t forget to sip on your drink with good company and your favourite mug. I’ve been digging the colour pink since the early 90’s. Naturally, I reached for trusty pink mug the moment I developed this recipe. You can only imagine my reaction when I discovered an entire page’s worth of pink mugs from – oh, happy day!

In fact, the fam and I will be moving to a new home this coming summer and I am SO excited to create a comfy, hygge-inspired space. When my best friend bought her place a couple of summers ago, she kept on sending me links to pieces she found from Safe to say, I was intrigued. Now, it’s my turn! I’ll definitely be turning to Wayfair for some of my home décor and storage solutions. I’m talking piles of throw blankets and even a big, fluffy chair for the little one.

How do you stay hygge? Do you know what it means? Had you ever heard of it? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
