According to healthychildren.org, “Play is how your toddler explores and learns about the world.” And let me tell you – playing is a huge part of our family’s schedule.

Toddler Activity: How to Encourage Counting with Unicorns

It’s really simple! All you have to do is print out my “Count the Unicorn Rainbow” activity on cardstock, cut, and assemble – ta-da! You’ve got a fun toddler activity full of unicorn cuteness.

PBS states that, “Around 24 months, the average child uses a few number words without understanding quantity. […] On average, an older two-year-old understands the words ‘one’ and ‘two.’

Starting early is never harmful. When I play this game with Leo (who’s just a little over 2 years old), we will randomly draw a number together and then I hand him the corresponding number of rainbows, counting aloud as he inserts one into each unicorn box.

This toddler activity is a great way to pass the time and avoid the dreaded “bored and restless” period of the day.

I’m thrilled that our latest toddler activity involves unicorns – if you know me, I’m totally obsessed with them. (Ahem, I mean have you seen my Unicorn Cupcakes and my Tri-Coloured Unicorn Cookies?)

  1. It is always nice to find something for the toddlers to play with and have fun. Feed the unicorn sounds like a great afternoon activity.

  2. My son is only 3 months old. But I am trying to find stimulating activities for him right now. This might be too advanced for him but I will keep it in mind for the future!

  3. This is a really clever idea. Though I don’t have any toddler’s. I could use this for my nieces and nephews when they come over.

  4. Oh yes this is a great bonding activity with your child. Rather than spend more time playing games in tablet or watching movies, interaction time is also great.

  6. This is so cute and simple for a toddler, I love this idea! When my kids were little I always tried to keep toys and smaller games on-hand when travelling or out to entertain them. This would have been perfect.
