Giving my plate o’ cookies a Halloween makeover. Get your bandages ready, here are my Mummy Sugar Cookies.
Okay, Halloween is over a month away, but I gotta be prepared, right?! I recently wrote a post on 5 Minutes for Mom featuring my Spider Crinkle Cookies and well, it looks like I’ve caught the cookie bug!
Sugar cookies always seem to be reserved for the holidays. But why?! I think there’s a special place for sugar cookies on any Halloween sweets table.
I had tons of fun making these Mummy Sugar Cookies. Rather than only using buttercream, I opted to mix it up with different (and super sweet) mediums.
How to Make Mummy Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- Your favourite recipe for sugar cookies (aim to bake one dozen circles, about 2 1/2 inches in diameter)
- 6-7 oz. white fondant
- Cornstarch, for rolling
- 1/2 stick butter, softened
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 3-4 tbsp milk
- Black decorating frosting
- 24 candy googly eyes
Yields: One dozen mummy sugar cookies
Process
Ensure that your cookies are cool before decorating. Start by prepping your fondant “bandages.” Line a baking sheet with wax paper and set aside.
Lightly dust a clean working surface with cornstarch. Also, add some on your rolling pin.
Roll out your fondant so that it’s about 1/4 of an inch thick. Cut into long strips and set carefully on your lined baking sheet.
Time for the buttercream: using an electric mixer, beat butter, confectioners’ sugar, and milk on medium speed. Gradually increase to high until smooth. Your buttercream is ready once it forms semi-stiff peaks.
*Note: If you find your buttercream too runny, you can add more icing sugar, 1 tbsp at a time. If it’s too thick, add 1 tbsp of milk at a time.
Using an offset spatula, spread buttercream on each cookie.
At the top of your cookie, around where you’d place your mummy’s eyes, spread a small dollop of black decorating icing. Top it with your candy googly eyes.
This is where the fun starts: start spreading your fondant strips on random parts of your cookies. Trim where necessary.
Okay, so did I get you in the Halloween spirit now? Hope so!
