Our dining room reveal proves that the terms “style” and “kid-friendly” can go hand-in-hand.

When we said “yes” to the realtor for our new condo, I was ecstatic about the dining area. Our space boasts an open concept floor plan, making things feel larger and brighter. Right now, it’s the perfect fit for our little family. While it’s not the biggest in square footage, having a dining room was an important item on our realty-checklist. Mealtime is everything to us, so it was key that we had a space to accommodate breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Life with a toddler is everything but boring. When it comes to décor, I’m already quite the minimalist. Now that Leo is walking and approaching things with the utmost curiosity, I knew that I had to carefully plan out my décor blueprint.

Here’s how I put together our dining area. Ladies and gents, I present to you our dining room:

Staying Stylish and Keeping it Kid-Friendly: Our Dining Room Reveal

The Right Furniture

The first thing I wanted to do was to keep everything light and bright. Lucky for us, our dining room gets in a ton of natural light, so I wanted to keep that flowing with the furniture. We opted for a white table and light grey chairs. How do I keep it toddler-friendly? The seat cushions have removable covers, making it easy-peasy for clean-up.

“Lazy Susan” Centerpiece

Often when I look at photos for home décor inspiration, rooms are filled to the brim with decorations like plants, vases, frames, etc. With a toddler, those “little touches” just aren’t realistic. With just one little tug, place settings full of china and other breakables could come crashing on the floor.

For our dining room, I opted for a “Lazy Susan” as our table’s centrepiece. Here, I place all of my required items for when I’m hosting. This way, they’re well-presented and at arm’s reach (but out of Leo’s reach).

Pops of Color

You know how I talked about big, bright, and full of light? I was lucky enough to score a large, white wall in our dining room… but I knew that somehow, it needed a splash of colour. Painting was totally out of the question. In fact, when we first visited the condo, the original owner kept everything simple and hung up one beautiful piece of art, making me think: “Where can I get something that will do this place some justice?” I came close to commissioning my best friend to paint a canvas for me but then I came across Posterjack.

While they offer a large range of printing-types, their canvas prints are what caught my attention right away.

Posterjack allows you to take an image and turn it into something creative. For my first-ever Posterjack experience, I opted to purchase a stock image (because lemons + pink equals all the heart eyes, right?!) and turn it into a three-panel canvas. It was exactly what our dining room needed: a burst of color to keep things fresh, bright, and clean. Plus, all I had to do was hang it. The canvas was already wrapped on its frame, leaving the entire process headache-free… exactly what this busy mama needs while decorating. (Okay, fine, I’ll admit: with Joe being more than a foot taller than me, he did most of the hanging while I told him where to centre and straighten).

  1. I love your dining room space! It looks comfy and inviting, and the pops of color are perfect. It doesn’t look bland or stuffy. I love those bright wall art pieces!

  2. This is such a cute dining room! I love the colors and that table is amazing, totally my style as a mom of 3 who still wants to keep things looking cute!

  3. I wish that I had a bit more creativity when it comes to decorating the house. Our table is simple and so is the wall space. It is missing a pop of color and finding a photo is a cool idea.
