Whether served as a side or a main, this recipe tastes like sheer perfection.

Growing up, baked beans were always considered a breakfast side. Served along a plateful of scrambled eggs and bacon, baked beans were only treated as an afterthought throughout my upbringing.

Now, I’ve finally decided to give it the spotlight it deserves.

Last year, I decided to take the leap and buy my very own Instant Pot.

After the purchase, I felt pretty intimidated. I didn’t really understand what the Instant Pot was – a slow cooker? A porridge-maker? A glorified pressure cooker? How in the world do I work this thing?!

I scoured the net for recipes and tips. But after a couple of “burn” notifications, I realized that there was going to be a bit of a learning curve.

Fast forward to today, the Instant Pot has become an anchor in our family’s kitchen. I love the idea of putting together a meal one-pot style and my recipe for Instant Pot Baked Beans offers exactly that.

Ingredients

A tested and true recipe for Instant Pot Baked Beans.

  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 cup ham, cut into cubes
  • 1 340 ml can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 340 ml can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 10 cherry tomatoes, cut in half
  • Salt, pepper, and sweet paprika to taste

Yields: 4 to 6 servings

Process

Set Instant Pot to the sauté function and add canola oil. Allow to heat for a minute.

Add chopped ham and sauté for about 2 minutes. (Helpful hint: be sure to use a wooden spoon – I find that using a wooden spoon while cooking in the Instant Pot keeps the inner pot from getting scratched.)

Turn off IP’s sauté function and add beans and water. Mix.

Add ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard on top. You want to avoid getting these ingredients on the bottom of your Instant Pot, so make sure to really just pour it on top.

Close the lid and set your IP manual pressure (high) for 8 minutes.

Once the time is up, allow for a 15-minute NPR.

Open the lid and stir while adding cherry tomatoes.

Season with salt, pepper and paprika. Serve in individual bowls.

  1. We loved baked beans! I know making it from a can is not as healthy, but I never saw it done so seamlessly like you present here! Thanks for this, I am going to try this in my instant pot!

  2. These look delicious. My boyfriend has been wanting an insta pot but we have a slow cooker so I didn’t really want to buy one. Do you think making the change is worth it?

    • Hi Jaye!

This was exactly the same question I asked myself. I haven’t used a slow cooker since getting an Instant Pot just because the IP yielded such quick results. I would definitely make the switch but still keep a slow cooker on-hand! Both would be very beneficial!

  3. I admit it, I admit it. I don’t have an instapot. And I honestly don’t know that I would ever invest in one! I can’t eat beans and I love crispy food over smooshy (lol) so my air-fryer is my best friend! That being said, instapots are legit saving the world, one busy person at a time!

  4. These beans look so good! I cannot wait to try them! I love sweet flavors like you have here!!

  5. My husband is a firefighter and they could really use an Instant Pot at their fire station! They love anything with beans-especially chili. This recipe would be a fan favorite for sure.
