It’s Halloween: we heard that creepy is in style.

When it comes to different celebrations, I am all about the desserts. Remember those Witch Finger Cookies I made a couple of weeks ago? Well, today I’m back in action – and this time with a bag o’ bones!

Well actually, a plateful of bones – and they’re made of sugar cookies.

In fact, it’s all thanks to those Witch Finger Cookies that I got inspired for my latest treat. I really enjoyed the creative aspect behind such a simple recipe. Sugar cookies are normally baked into flat shapes, but molding and sculpting them brings out so much originality! I started brainstorming different shapes for Halloween. Then, it occurred to me – why not shape them into dusty bones?!

I love the fact that this recipe does not require any tools or cookie cutters. All it takes is a bit of imagination (and some simple shaping). Then, voilà! The spookiest (and sweetest!) Halloween treat to serve to your ghoulish guests.

Here’s how to make a batch of your own:

How to Make Bones Cookies for Halloween

You’ll Need:
1 stick butter (about ½ cup), softened
½ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 ½ cups a/p flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
12-14 oz. white fondant
Cocoa powder

Yields: 8-10 cookies

Using an electric mixer, beat together butter, sugar and egg until creamy.

Add vanilla and mix some more.

In a small bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

Slowly add dry ingredients into wet ingredients, while beating on low speed.

Increase speed to high until cookie dough forms.

Roll cookie dough into a large sphere and wrap with plastic.

Place in refrigerator and chill overnight.

Remove wrapped cookie dough from refrigerator and let sit for 10 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

To assemble one cookie, start by rolling out 4 small spheres from the cookie dough, about ½ an inch in diameter.

Roll out a log of cookie dough, about ½ an inch thick and 3 inches long.

Attach heart shapes on either end of cookie dough log.

Cover one cookie and press to hug the shape. Trim the edges, leaving an inch circumference to fold underneath.

Score the fondant-covered cookie and brush cocoa powder to give it an old, spooky look.
