I will never ever say no to a good cup of hot chocolate. Growing up, my mom used to pile marshmallows on top and make it extra sweet. Somehow, every cup that she made would be the best hot cocoa experience ever. Stirred to perfection and made with so much love, it was the drink that would often accompany my breakfasts – especially during the holiday season.

I was always so accustomed to store-bought powder and syrups for my hot chocolates. Now that I am expecting my first child, I wanted to set a new tradition and try to make a serving from scratch.

Here’s my take on homemade hot chocolate:

Extra Chocolate Hot Chocolate

1 cup 2% milk (or, the amount that fits into your mug)
1 ounce dark baking chocolate
1 tsp cocoa powder
2 tsp granulated sugar
whipped cream and candy cane for topping (optional)

In a small pot, start heating your milk over medium. After a couple of minutes, add in your baking chocolate and stir continuously.

Once baking chocolate has dissolved, stir in cocoa powder and granulated sugar. Do not let the milk boil. If necessary, turn down heat even more. Make sure all ingredients are well combined and dissolved.

Pour into your mug – be careful! The beverage could be extremely hot. Wait a few minutes before adding your whipped cream and candy cane.
