Create living room eye candy with my surefire tips on the cutest (and easiest!) gallery wall layout.
It’s time to spruce-up your living room!
This summer, our little family moved to a new (to us) home. When we first visited the semi-detached, it was love at first sight. I fell hard (and fast!) for its farmhouse style.
When it was time to move, everything went smoothly. Before we knew it, we were all settled. Every room was minimal yet, functional. The only thing left to do was the fun part – decorate!
We decided to take it one room at a time. This would allow us to stay budget-conscious and also, to really put our hearts into each makeover.
So first up, we decided to tackle our most used area: the living room.
Our living room is quite large, measuring at 12 feet by 12 feet. After condo-living for so many years, I found it challenging to adequately fill-up a big space.
Our living room boasts one wall with faux wood paneling. It’s opposite to our main window and sofa, so we decided it would be the best side for our tv and entertainment unit. This left me with one very large wall to work with. I just knew that I could treat it as a blank slate.
Immediately, I envisioned a gallery wall. We have so many family photographs that I’ve been itching to showcase. I opted for big photos and a neat layout. I figured it would be the best way to create impact in such a large space.
Here’s how I did it:
How to Create an Easy Gallery Wall Layout
I get it – putting up a gallery wall can be intimidating. What size photos should I go for? What kind of frames should I use? Will everything look cohesive? Will it look too busy?
These were all the thoughts that ran through my mind as I stared at our large wall. But, I’m oh-so very happy with how everything turned out.
I’m all about a clean look and this is why I decided to go for a “grid style” gallery. If you’re looking for an easy gallery wall layout, this look is easy to put together.
The idea behind a grid gallery wall is that you have the same amount of photos in every row you decide to hang. They are all spaced evenly between each other. Moreover, each framed photo/canvas is the same size, preferably with a 1:1 ratio dimension.
Once you’ve decided on your gallery wall layout, choose your photos.
Before committing to anything, I used Photoshop to whip-up a quick collage. This gave me an idea of what pictures would look good together in terms of composition, coloring, lighting, etc.
Choose a Website That’ll Do it All
One of the most challenging parts to a gallery wall is getting all of the frames and photos together. Where do you develop the photos? Which frames should you purchase?
Posterjack is a company that’ll do it all. They’re photo art experts who offer custom photo prints to make your dream gallery wall (and more!) come true. Last year, they helped us put together this beautiful three-panel canvas for our dining room. So naturally, I turned to them for our family’s highly-anticipated gallery wall. The result: a conversational piece that I’m beyond impressed with.
Shopping through Posterjack’s user-friendly website, you’ll see that you can upload photos and choose how you want them printed. They offer quality products like framed prints, books, calendars, mugs and cards.
For our grid gallery wall layout, we opted for their canvas prints, at 16×16 inches per print.
Start With Newspaper
When our Posterjack prints arrived, I was so pumped to put them up.
One of my favourite tips for mounting your photo gallery: trace each canvas/frame on newspaper and cut them out. You then tape the newspaper pieces on your wall to test out measurements/spacing before committing to hanging your actual photos.
Mark it Out!
Once you’re happy with your newspaper layout, mark your walls with a pencil. This way, you’ll know exactly where to hang the photos.
How Will You Hang Them?
Because our home is a rental, I didn’t want to nail more holes in the wall than necessary. I opted for sturdy wall stickers so they can easily be removed when it’s time to take them down. Plus, they leave more room for error.
And voilà – our easy gallery wall layout is complete. I couldn’t be happier with the result. I’m seriously wow’ed by the quality of the canvases – they’re absolutely superb. Each photo is crisp and the canvas is wrapped with such precision and care.
Ever since we put up our gallery wall, we’ve received tremendous compliments by our guests.
One room down and only a few more to go! Our living room is now comfy, cozy and rustic-chic.
