These Christmas light cupcakes are getting our family excited for the holiday season.

They’re definitely not the kind of lights you’ll get tangled in.
Once the holiday season kicks in, our family gets into beast baking mode at full-force. This year, I’ve been having tons of fun creating all sorts of delicious treats! Have you seen my Snowmen Meringue Cookies or my Christmas Tree Cupcakes? They’re some of my favourite recipes I’ve ever created.
My Christmas Light Cupcakes were so much fun to make – and so easy, too! Plus, I managed to purchase most of the ingredients from Bulk Barn, my one-stop shop for… well, just about everything in all of my baking endeavours!
I’ve seen all sorts of Christmas light desserts but I wanted to take my cupcakes up a notch. Lights are all about brightness, so I decided to garnish our buttercream with a hefty helping of shiny sprinkles. Bring on the shine factor!
Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to make your very own Christmas light cupcakes:
How to Make Christmas Light Cupcakes
Ingredients Needed:
- One dozen of your favourite chocolate cupcakes (we used Bulk Barn’s cake mix to make ours)
- 1 stick unsalted butter, softened (about ½ cup)
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
- 1-2 tbsp milk
- ½ cup gold and white shiny sprinkles (ie.: coarse sugar)
- Black decorating frosting
- 60-65 M&Ms
Yields: One dozen decorated cupcakes
Before starting the decorating process, ensure that your cupcakes are completely cool. You don’t want any buttercream melting off!
Start by preparing your buttercream. Place all ingredients in a large bowl: softened butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk (start with 1 tbsp and add another, slowly if you feel like the buttercream is too dry).
Beat all buttercream ingredients with an electric mixer, starting on slow speed and gradually increasing to high.
Once all ingredients are smooth and form semi-stiff peaks, scoop into a piping bag and frost each cupcake.
Pour coarse sugar/shiny sprinkles into a bowl. Dip each frosted cupcake into the bowl of sprinkles.
Attach Wilton tip #3 to your bladck decorating frosting and pipe out 1-2 curvy lines on each cupcake.
Add 4-8 M&Ms sideways onto the black, curvy lines on each cupcake (depending on how many lines you have on each one). You’ll want about 4-5 M&Ms for each “string of lights.”
