4 Fashion-Forward Cities and Why Every Fashionista Should Visit Them

Calling all fashionistas: here are Josh’s top picks for fashion-forward cities. Get your wanderlust on… in style.

Our top picks for fashion-forward cities. Get your wanderlust on... in style.

Our travel expert, Josh Mark, is back to give us the low-down on some of the best cities to travel to for fashion-inspo. Self-proclaimed fashionistas: this one’s definitely for you.

Back in college, my best friends and I would make annual trips to NYC for a taste of high-fashion. Being born and raised in Montreal, we were lucky enough to have access to iconic brands that housed their boutiques within our city. Still, there was something so fresh and exciting about visiting the Big Apple on our Easter breaks.

4 Fashion-Forward Cities and Why Every Fashionista Should Visit Them with Josh Mark

Aside from the usual fashion-mecca suspects of New York, Paris and Milan, here are four more fashion-forward cities every fashionista must visit!

VANCOUVER (Canada)
With a huge emphasis on healthy lifestyle and embracing the outdoors, it’s no surprise that Vancouver-based brands have managed to combine fashion and function. This city is home to Arc’teryx, Herschel Supply Co. and wings+horns, just to name a few.

ANTWERP (Belgium)
Many designers can credit their success to Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Some of the most successful fashion heavyweight alumni include Maison Margiela, Raf Simons, Dries Van Noten and Dirk Bikkembergs. With fashion superstars like those, Antwerp has proven that they are here to stay on the global fashion scene.

Our top picks for fashion-forward cities. Get your wanderlust on... in style.

SEOUL (South Korea)
Much of Seoul’s fashion aesthetic takes Western inspiration and kicks it up a notch with its own Eastern twist. This fashion scene is best known for its street style with the use of bold and flamboyant colors and detailing. The growing K-POP phenomenon has only helped push this city further into the fashion spotlight. Seoul’s most notable brands are Liful and Wooyoungmi.

TOKYO (Japan)
Known for its unusual and eccentric street wear aesthetic, Tokyo’s fashion scene pulls from within its own culture and heritage. Local brands like Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto and have shown staying power in the global fashion world with their own labels as well as collaborating with other mass-market brands.

Unicorn-Themed Parties 101: The Unicorn Cupcake

Make your next bash one for the books with this simple (and fabulous) unicorn cupcake recipe.

Throwing parties doesn't have to be nerve-racking. Planning on going with a unicorn-theme celebration? Here's an easy way to make Unicorn Cupcakes.

Parties, celebrations, family gatherings… I know how they can get. (Stressful, demanding, confusing.) Over the last few years, I’ve fallen in love with party planning. Be it the baking, decorating, or the simple idea of togetherness, I am just so drawn to the idea of throwing bashes.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I never fly by an event worry-free. (A part of me feels like it’s a part of the fun… you know, the “good” kind of stress?). In fact, right before Leo’s big birthday party, I called one of my best friends in a crying panic. At the time of the phone call, things weren’t falling into place and I released all of my emotion on him (because what are bffs for, right?!).

To continue with Fabulous Habits‘ unicorn theme, I’ve decided to whip up the easiest unicorn cupcake recipe… ever. Unicorns are trending like nobody’s business. I see all sorts of unicorn parties popping up on Insta, Pinterest… everywhere! (May I also ask: Why am I not invited to any of them?!)

Themed parties aren’t as intricate as they seem. All it takes is some imagination and making-do with the resources you have. My unicorn cupcake recipe is simple – most of the grunt work goes into the unicorn horns, which I’ll walk you through step-by-step.

Throwing parties doesn't have to be nerve-racking. Planning on going with a unicorn-theme celebration? Here's an easy way to make Unicorn Cupcakes.

Unicorn-Themed Parties 101: The Unicorn Cupcake

A dozen of your favourite cupcakes (ready-made from the box is fine)
2 sticks butter, softened
4 cups confectioners’ sugar
2-4 tbsp milk
Violet gel food coloring
Red gel food coloring
5 oz. ready-made white cake fondant
Pink cake dusting powder
Candy flowers

Before decorating, ensure that your cupcakes are completely cool – otherwise you’ll have a sticky, melted mess.

In a stand mixer, start mixing your butter and sugar on medium speed. Add milk one tablespoon at a time and increase the speed.

Your buttercream should form stiff peaks – so add confectioners’ sugar and milk accordingly. Milk will loosen it up, sugar will make it more stiff.

Divide the buttercream in two bowls. Colour one violet (about 1 small drop) and the other, pink (2 red drops of the red). Mix each bowl until the buttercream is completely coloured.

Add both coloured buttercreams in a large bowl and fold into one another, ensuring that the colours blend but don’t mix. Using a piping bag, frost each cupcake (I used a 1M Wilton tip).

Roll fondant into spheres, about 1/2 an inch in diameter. Then roll them out so that they’re about 3 inches long.

Throwing parties doesn't have to be nerve-racking. Planning on going with a unicorn-theme celebration? Here's an easy way to make Unicorn Cupcakes.

Lightly “bend” your fondant strip (halfway, so that the ends are even) and start twisting to create the shape of the unicorn horn. Place on a baking sheet and brush lightly with your cake dust.

Throwing parties doesn't have to be nerve-racking. Planning on going with a unicorn-theme celebration? Here's an easy way to make Unicorn Cupcakes.

Allow the unicorn horns to dry for about 20 minutes and place on your frosted cupcake. Add a candy flower to each one.

And there you have it! Your first step to a beautiful unicorn-themed party. See?! Told you it would be easy! Oh and also, the unicorn confetti adds a super cute touch!

Breakfast Magic: Unicorn Toast

What I Wish I Knew While Preparing for Daycare

Preparing for daycare doesn’t have to be a scary process. Make the transition easy for both mama and baby with these stories:

Preparing for daycare doesn't have to be a scary process. Make the transition easy for both mama and baby with stories from some Canadian mamas.
Thank you to NameBubbles.com for sponsoring this post – all opinions are 100% my own and I couldn’t be more excited for this partnership.

I’ve been so eager to write this article because amongst my peers, the majority of my mommy-friends put their kids in daycare. I’ve heard all sorts of tales – some ranging from “My kid refused and we tried again and she refused some more,” to “She adjusted so quickly and it has been amazing for our family!”

You guys, generations have changed and the larger statistic stands: in most family arrangements, both parents work. Daycare is not only an option, but may be a prime necessity for most households.

I gathered thoughts and opinions from some real Canadian mamas and their take on daycare transition. Here are our tips:

What I Wish I Knew While Preparing for Daycare

Transition Slowly
Separation anxiety can happen to many children… especially when they’re still infants. It can be a shocking experience to be left with a roomful of other kids and not spot a familiar face (especially if your little one is an only-child/first born).

“It’s important to integrate the child slowly into daycare,” early childhood educator Julie C. suggests, “a few hours the first few days, then a few half days, then full days.”

Your Family’s Best Interest
Have you ever felt it? The moment of becoming a parent and then quickly realizing that loads of people will pass judgment on everything?

Your decision is yours. People will always want to give their opinion. Don’t let anyone’s comments make you second-guess your instincts. You know what’s best for your family.

“Looking back on my first experience integrating my little one into daycare I wish someone would’ve told me (and I would’ve listened) to ‘stay away from all comments online’ and ‘it’s okay for your child to love and be loved by others’. Both are easier said than done, but I wish I would’ve been a little less anxious, and feel a little less guilty about the entire process.” – Crystal S.

What I Wish I Knew While Preparing for Daycare

Practice that Morning Routine
Daycare often involves a new morning routine for your family. As a part of your transition process, practice your “daycare mornings” a week prior. By doing so, you can make any necessary adjustments and just get used to it all.

Label Everything
Is it just me, or do babies, infants, and toddlers have so much stuff? You most likely have a (long) list of items that your little one will need to bring with him/her. Make sure you label them so that those items never get misplaced.

Preparing for daycare doesn't have to be a scary process. Make the transition easy for both mama and baby with stories from some Canadian mamas.

Recently, our family learned about NameBubbles and we were thoroughly impressed by their high-quality, durable, waterproof, personalized labels.

I am all about staying organized. I mean, just ask Joe. He thinks that I go “overboard” with my “orderly obsession.” In my eyes it’s: “Better safe than sorry!” Labelling is a great method to keep things neat and coordinated.

On NameBubbles.com, you can choose a fun design from a long list of specialized labels and personalize it as you wish.

NameBubbles‘ labels are absolutely brilliant. I couldn’t get enough of their clothing labels, which can be used for any kid at any age! You can choose between press-and-stick clothing labels to iron-on ones (which are oh-so ideal for no-tag garments).

Preparing for daycare doesn't have to be a scary process. Make the transition easy for both mama and baby with stories from some Canadian mamas.

I am most impressed with how durable the labels are. Having worked a clerical ‘9 to 5’, you can imagine all the labelling I had to do. But don’t get mixed up between standard labels and those made by NameBubbles. Theirs are tough, waterproof, dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe… yes, yes, and yes! (Excuse me while I go on a labelling frenzy). So before you think of just writing your child’s name with a tape and marker, consider going for NameBubbles‘ quality stuff (plus, they’re super cute!). Their daycare label packs are the perfect starter kit to label just about everything.

The Right Fit
If you’re not comfortable, then your kiddo will probably sense it. And most likely, they’ll feel the same. Visits and talking to the instructors is such an important aspect in the preparation process.

“I wish I had followed my instincts. When I felt the daycare wasn’t the best one for my daughter, I should have listened to myself instead of trying to convince myself that I was just being overprotective. Dropping our children to daycare shouldn’t make us feel worried. I know that now.” – Linh L.

Breakfast Magic: Unicorn Toast

Who wouldn't love some unicorn magic to start their day? Here's our take on the oh-so-popular unicorn toast.

When I get into something, I really get into it. Two years ago, it was marble. I decked out my kitchen in small marble accessories, carried my phone in a typical faux-marble hardcase, gawked at any marble countertop. It was chaos (or so Joe thought), but I simply couldn’t resist.

And so, ladies and gents, I have decided to kick off my month-long birthday celebration with no other than a unicorn-themed blog post. I don’t know if it’s the pastels, the rainbows, the glitter, or the fact that I’m a new mom… but I am completely infatuated.

Who wouldn't love some unicorn magic to start their day? Here's our take on the oh-so-popular unicorn toast.

As a recipe developer, this new “obsession” couldn’t be more perfect. My mind is bursting with ideas and I can’t wait to share some of them with you.

Scrolling through Pinterest (psst: follow me here!), I am sure you’ve seen countless versions of unicorn poop, unicorn toast, etc. In fear of missing out, I’ve got to hop on-board. Here’s my take on the oh-so-popular (and the oh-so-magical): unicorn toast.

…breakfast couldn’t get any sweeter!

How to Make Fabulous Unicorn Toast

4 oz. (approx. 1/4 cup) cream cheese, softened
2 tsp sugar
2 gel food colourings of your choice (I chose red and yellow)
3 small bowls
1 English muffin, toasted
Sprinkles

In one of your bowls, mix together your cream cheese and sugar. Once combined, divide the mixture into all three bowls and give each one a different colour. (In our case, we left one white, the other pink and the other, yellow.)

Apply separate dollops on your toast and with a butter knife, spread and blend (but don’t mix) the colours.

Apply sprinkles as desired and enjoy the magic.

5 Ways to Avoid Jet Lag

Your wanderlust game might be strong… but is your yawning from jet lag even stronger? Here are 5 ways to beat it.

Though your wanderlust might be strong, is your tiredness from jet lag even stronger? Here are 5 ways to avoid it.

With springtime finally rolling around, Joe and I are excited to start planning our family vacations. Growing up, the both of us were lucky enough to travel during summer breaks. Naturally, we want to offer the same type of experience for Leo.

I remember coming back from my first trip to Asia (I went to visit family in the Philippines… for the first time I ever. I was 23 years old). Upon my return, my jet lag was out of control. I remember the uncontrollable sleepiness as I sat at my desk job. Even taking a week off to rest just didn’t cut it.

I decided it was time to give you the top tips in avoiding that funky, jet-lag feeling. Of course, I couldn’t ask anyone but my travel consultant, Josh Mark to give his professional advice:

5 Ways to Avoid Jet Lag with Josh Mark, Expedia Cruise Ship Travel Consultant

{one} Try to get a good night’s sleep before you travel — you are about to take your body into battle and the best defence is rest. The adjustment will be a lot easier if you’re rested.

{two} If possible, avoid landing at night — by arriving during the day, you have daylight to help keep you awake for as long as possible on the first day. This way, you’ll be forcing your body onto your new routine of waking/sleeping hours.

Though your wanderlust might be strong, is your tiredness from jet lag even stronger? Here are 5 ways to avoid it.

{three} Avoid stimulants and depressants — this includes sleeping pills, alcohol and caffeinated products. By consuming alcohol and coffee, you will further dehydrate yourself, and the sleeping pills will leave you super groggy upon arrival.

{four} Keep on moving while in-flight — by doing so, you’ll keep your blood circulating and you feeling better.

{five} Take a cruise through the timezones — I half say this in jest, but the truth is, gradually crossing timezones. Setting the clocks ahead or backward by only one hour per night will make the adjustment much easier, plus you get to make an epic vacation out of it!

What are your travel tips and tricks? Going on vacation soon? Got questions? Josh and I would love to help – let’s talk about it in the comments below!

8 of the Cutest Easter Desserts to Add on This Year’s Sweets Table

This year, make your sweets table one they'll remember. Here are 8 super cute Easter desserts that will have your guests talking about your party non-stop.

Here are 8 of our favorite Easter desserts. Add these to your sweets table and this year, your guests will be talking about your Spring-feast non-stop.

I am all about sweets tables. They can easily elevate a party because, come on, who doesn’t love a good dessert (or two?).

When I put together this sweets table for Leo’s first birthday, I was thrilled with how it came out. Although I put in tons of effort for the party’s overall aesthetic, I noticed how the table of treats was the one detail that had everyone talking.

To continue with my success, I’ve decided to put something together for this year’s Easter celebrations. I scoured the web to find some of the most brilliant (and not-so-difficult) Easter desserts to showcase on my dessert spread. Here are the ones that caught my attention:

This year, make your sweets table one they'll remember. Here are 8 super cute Easter desserts that will have your guests talking about your party non-stop.

  1. Lavender French Madeleines to give my spread some elegance and sophitication
  2.  A splash of color with these tie-dye cupcakes.
  3. A simple design to add the perfect amount of “Easter magic” on these cupcakes.
  4. The kids are absolutely going to love these bunny cupcakes!
  5. Love the idea of a sherbet cake.
  6. You can’t go wrong with a carrot cake like these Mini Carrot Cake Bundts.
  7. Lemon and freshness with this dessert (adding the lemon flavor for Joe since he’s a fan).
  8. This cake is definitely going to be the centrepiece.

Which one would you most likely try to make? What kind of dinner/spread will you have this Easter?

Key Pieces to Have in Your Toddler’s Wardrobe

…because wardrobe variety is important at any age.

All thanks to Children's Place, I've put together the most varied toddler's wardrobe ever! From formal to sporty... Leo now has a way to mix-and-match his outfits. #mystylePLACE

When I was preparing for Leo’s arrival, I wish I had purchased more clothes in the 12+ months category. When you’re expecting, you’re often gifted with heaps of onesies in newborn sizes. While they are mighty cute, mothers often find themselves with countless unworn garments ranging in the 0-to-3 month size.

(I encourage you to keep this in mind for the next baby shower you’ll be attending.)

Now that Leo has entered the very early stages of toddlerhood, I’m putting together outfits with a little more thought. Infants are rather easy to dress: outfits comprising of onesies, cotton pants, and soft-soled shoes are the way to go. But now, Leo is up and about: he’s playing, crawling, and learning to walk (!!!). I aim to mix-and-match his clothes, going for a capsule-style wardrobe (toddler-style).

All thanks to Children's Place, I've put together the most varied toddler's wardrobe ever! From formal to sporty... Leo now has a way to mix-and-match his outfits. #mystylePLACE

Recently, I checked out The Children’s Place to shop their newest collections. I love how most of their offerings are sold in sets: incredibly convenient yet still perfect for mix-and-matching. Not to mention, their newest Baby Bundles line makes shopping for your little ones easy, budget-friendly, and super fashionable. Buying only a handful of items (especially from Baby Bundles), I managed to complete a good chunk of Leo’s springtime ensembles.

Key Pieces to Have in Your Toddler’s Wardrobe

Lounging Around
Okay, so Leo is still a little tyke… and yeah, there’s a lot of lounging around at home (and mama cannot complain!). This outfit is exactly what we needed for our day-to-day routine. Straight from the Baby Bundles line, this set came complete with a zip-up hoodie, 2 onesies (one long-sleeve and one short-sleeve), and comfy loungewear pants. Perfect for playing and snuggling with mommy!

Fun in the Sun
Now that warmer weather has bestowed my neck of the woods, we’re going into full-swing with sun-friendly outfits. This shorts-and-button-down combo is too adorable for words. Plus, it’ll be great to pack for our upcoming summer vacation.

Sporty and Spunky
Oh, so you have a toddler? So you’re used to running around, sweating, and attending play-dates alongside your little munchkin? Then you’ve got to add a stylish tracksuit to your toddler’s wardrobe. It’s key for layering and staying comfy while being active.

Formal
Do you ever feel like your kids have more social gatherings than yourself? I swear, birthday parties and play dates take over most of our weekend plans. Make sure your little one is looking dapper with some formal-wear. I picked out this suspenders-and-pants set and can’t wait for my little man to wear it on Easter.

Onesies
The basic bodysuit from the Baby Bundles collection is key to have in your toddler’s wardrobe. Think of it as your basic tank or white tee. It’s convenient to wear under cardigans and amazing for layering. (You know, on the coldest winter days and your child’s shirt lifts up as you carry him?) Well, with these, no more exposed, cold skin – yay! Trust me, they’re totally a must-have.

Green Jacket with Fluffy Pink Details

Bouncing into transitional-wear with this green jacket and its fluffy pink details.

This green jacket caught my attention because of all its detailing: gold hardware, satin fabric, and a fluffy pink collar.

I couldn’t be more ecstatic that the month of March is well on its way. I’m grateful to live in a city where I witness all four seasons in their true form. But I can’t lie: the cold has been really getting to me as of late.

Everybody says it: “Don’t worry, February is a short month!” “It will pass!” Well, ladies and gents – it’s the end of the month and March 21 marks the beginning of the spring. Yes, the season of new growth, new promises, and… better weather!

This green jacket caught my attention because of all its detailing: gold hardware, satin fabric, and a fluffy pink collar.

I may be bias towards spring just because my birthday lands within its gentle months. I’m excited for the lighter jackets, the sun lasting longer, and for less snow.

I found this green bomber on sale at the Gap just before the holidays. I bought it with the full intention of wearing it as soon as the weather allowed. Its fluffy pink details made me say, “Yes, yes, and yes!” These fluffy pink collars are reminding me to hang tight… that better weather will soon be shining upon us!

How do you feel about the weather? (Not to sound too cliché or anything.) Have you ever experienced the winter blues? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!

Fun Details to Add to Your Next Party

It's all in the details. Here are a few of my very own party tips.

It’s all in the details. Here are a few of my very own party pointers.

These last few years, I have had wonderful opportunities to throw ultra-fun (and larger) parties. I have always been one for hosting: before Joe and I got married, we would invite a handful of our friends over for weekly dinner parties. We’d plan out menus, serve wine, and think of entertainment (music, party games, etc.).

My love for party planning all started with our wedding: after putting together our nuptials, I was hooked. I fell in love with themed parties and keeping consistent with color palettes, motifs, and patterns. Our next big event was my son’s baptism where I did 100% of the décor. Some people call it hard work, but I genuinely enjoy every minute of it (even through some of the stressful moments).

Our most recent celebration was Leo’s first birthday party. Naturally, I gravitated towards the “jungle look” and ensured that all of the elements tied into our theme.

It's all in the details. Here are a few of my very own party tips.

Here are a few details that can make your party go from great to greater to extra-special-extra-fun-and-super-dee-dooper-fantastic!

Fun Details to Add to Your Next Party

A Sweet Table
Got a sweet tooth? Yeah, so do most people I know. The great thing about a sweet table is that you can still add salty treats to satisfy those with a more savory palette. Not to mention, a sweet table gives you the perfect opportunity to play around with your theme. For Leo’s birthday, the sweet table really helped elevate our party’s look. Little things like faux leaves, a “grass” table skirt, etc. were the finishing touches that our guests seem to have noticed right away.

An MC
Thinking of entertainment? An MC could take you a long way for keeping your crowd in good spirits. Even if you’re on a budget, you can ask a friend or family member to volunteer and write-up a program for them. Programs could include group games, dance contests, etc.

Photo Memories
The best way to capture the moment? Through photographs, of course! I love the idea of unique hashtags to disposable cameras being passed around. It’s always fun to look back on pictures through your guests’ perspectives.

One of the most fun details I ever added to our family’s parties was a photobooth. I love seeing my guests stand in front of the camera while striking a pose (whether glam or silly) – these are the kinds of memories that I truly appreciate.

It's all in the details. Here are a few of my very own party tips. It's all in the details. Here are a few of my very own party tips.

For Leo’s event, I was lucky enough to have Mak & Rossi Productions provide our stunning photobooth. Complete with a sparkling backdrop, our guests had fun using animal face masks and seeing their photographs come to life with a print-out that boasted the most perfect jungle-themed border.

Mak & Rossi Productions were incredible to work with: they were attentive to every detail and made sure that their photobooth tied-in fully with my party. They were interactive with my guests and made them feel comfortable. What’s best is that each guest had a photo to go home with and I received copies of my very own.

  • The first way is to find yourself a large jar for your savings. Mark 1-52 on the jar (for each week of the year) and make your weekly deposit. Week 1 is $1, week 2 is $2 all the way until you make week 52’s deposit of $52. At the end of the year, you’ll have a jar worth $1378.
  • Since I never have money on me (unless I deliberately go the the ATM) I prefer a more aggressive way to work the weekly jar. I’ve marker 1-52 on it again, and for weeks 1-20, I deposit $20/week, weeks 21-40 I deposit $40/week, and weeks 41-52 I deposit $60. At the end of my year, I’ll have $1920 stashed away.

SAVE YOUR COINS

You can also save all of your coins in one place and periodically roll them all to see where your savings are at. If you tend to carry cash, this could be a fun way, as we all hate having to carry around the extra weight of pesky coins. You’ll be surprised how much you can save this way.

STASH YOUR $5s

Another fun way is to stash away all of your $5 bills. They never seem to go very far when you’re out shopping, so why not make a collection?! Again, you’d be surprised as to how much money you can tuck away by doing that.

Combining trick #2 and #3 will save you even more. If you want a concrete savings goal, I’d stick with either version of the jar.

Which way do you think is most realistic for you? What trip are you planning on taking next? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
