Lemon Juice in the Apple Mixture

There are many reasons why pie and crisp recipes call for lemon juice. One of the reasons is to prevent the discoloration of the fruit in your pie/crisp.

Also, the lemon helps with flavor and in this case, it helps add some tartness to the apples.

For this recipe, you can also use apple cider in lieu of lemon juice. It would offer a different flavor but still be equally tasty.

Use Red Apples

Usually, people use tart apples in desserts, but I like how the sweeter apples taste in them! If you use the really sweet kind (like red delicious) you might want to cut back on how much sugar you use.
