Lock in your summer glow with Beautycounter consultant Rachel Mark.
It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you my friend and Beautycounter consultant, Rachel Mark. Not too long ago, Rachel introduced me to the world of Beautycounter and I’ve been hooked since. I started off with their kids products and felt so reassured that I was using only the best ingredient’s on Leo’s skin.
Today, Rachel is taking over the Fabulous Habits blog and giving us her surefire tips on how to achieve a summer glow. Throughout the season, we work on getting that (healthy) glimmer and color to our skintone. We’ve still got a few weeks left of summer and there is always room to maintain it, while staying safe and using only quality, non-toxic products.
Rachel Mark, Beautycounter Consultant: 5 Ways to Get (and Maintain) That Summer Glow
We are well into summer which means that by now we are seasoned with the patio, the pool and the picnics. But with the added sun exposure, the extra heat, and maybe a little extra indulgence (can we say margaritas?!), we can start to see the extra toll on our skin.
I became interested in safer skincare and beauty because of my work in the cancer-care field. Knowing how many chemicals go into our personal care products, as well as the lack of regulation of these ingredients (Canada only bans about 600 ingredients from personal care products, whereas the European Union bans 1400) despite the proven links to hormonal dysfunction, infertility, birth defects and developmental delays plus cancer (yes, parabens commonly found in products such as deodorants, lotions, and shampoos and been found in dissected breast cancer tumors), I knew that I had to link arms with a company that was doing something to not only advocate for more health protective laws in the US and Canada, but also provide high-performing safer alternatives. Beautycounter is transparent in their ingredients and process, screen rigorously for dangerous ingredients, source ethically and always act as educators first.
The great news about safer skincare is that with the absence of harsh chemicals and surfactants, they help to give us an even better summer glow, without the dryness and irritation that traditional products can leave as a side effect of use. Products are helpful, and so are our daily habits, so with that, here are the five ways to get and maintain that summer glow.
Because we are over 70% water, making sure that your cells are hydrated is essential for health and vitality. A lot of hydration comes from nutrition, so pick up that extra glass of water (aim for 8 cups daily, and even more if you are in the heat or sweating) and stock on your fruits and veggies. The ones that will help to cool you down and keep you hydrated have a higher water content and include watermelon, cucumber, spinach and berries.
#2 Out with the Old, In with the New
That’s right! To let the glow shine through, you need to slough off the dead skin. Exfoliating doesn’t have to mean leaving your skin red and raw, but a gentle removal of that outer layer will prevent excess oil production and acne, dry and flaky skin, and a dull complexion. Keeping with safer skincare, my faves are Beautycounter’s Sugar Body Scrub in Lemongrass for the body and the Nourishing Exfoliator and Overnight Resurfacing Peel. For the face, these provide both mechanical exfoliation (ie physical sloughing) and chemical exfoliation (ie use of naturally-derived acids to safely resurface and nourish your skin). Goodnight dull, good morning glow!
Gone are the days of Hawaiian Tropic Oil baking under that summer sun. Your skin might look toasty and bronzed for a few weeks, but think about the long-term damage, not to mention the increased cancer risk. Sunscreens have been in the news a lot lately with the increasing number of reactions (especially among kids and babies) to traditional brands like Banana Boat, AND with the revolutionary steps that Hawaii has recently taken to ban sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These two chemicals are the key ingredients in most chemical sunscreens, but have been linked to destruction of the coral reefs and hormone shifts in the fish feeding off the reefs. This means that they can’t be good for us either when we know that what we put on our skin is absorbed into the bloodstream with 26 seconds! When looking for sunscreen, look for physical, mineral based sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the key ingredients. My faves from Beautycounter are the Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Stick and the Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Mist. The key to sun protection is proper application, so use more than you think you should, and reapply often!
#4 Skip that SLS
Since sharing safer products with friends and family, I have gotten feedback that long-term skin irritations, eczema, dryness and itchiness have disappeared. But why? There are few pesky ingredients commonly found in personal care products that can suck out your skin’s hydration leaving it dry and irritated. Watch out for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These commonly used surfactants act as detergent, making products like soap, shampoo, and body wash bubbly. These chemicals are known to cause skin irritation, exacerbate eczema and trigger allergies. Plus the fact that they suck out your hydration is going to ensure that you don’t have that glow! Check the ingredients of your soaps and shampoos, and try to find one without SLS and SLES.
#5 Bronzer, Baby!
You’ve drank the water, eaten the cucumber, exfoliated your face and body, worn sunscreen and avoided those harsh chemicals that dry out your skin. You’re already glowing, but now’s the time to add a little extra. Bronzer is my go-to product in the summer (and into the fall, because let’s face it…we all want our tan to last a little longer). Bronzers come in all forms…oils, creams, and powders. Whichever you choose, opt for one that will add hydration and doesn’t contain heavy metals. Although you won’t see ingredients like lead and asbestos on the ingredients list, colourants used in cosmetics come from the earth and can contain trace amounts. The government doesn’t require screening of heavy metals and since most companies don’t want to pay for it, then end up on your face. My three heavy metal-free formulas from Beautycounter are the Illuminating Cream Highlighter in Bronze, Radiant All-Over Bronzer in Dune and the Glow Shimmer Oil.
Safer beauty doesn’t have to mean brown, chalky and patchouli. Since there are high performing and safer alternatives out there, it’s time we start to make the switch. If you’re looking for help or have questions, send me a message, and I would be happy to help you get that glow in a safer way!
